Smear Tests | Cervical Screening

  • A smear test, also called cervical screening or Pap smear, helps prevent cervical cancer by detecting abnormal cells early

  • Screening checks for high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV), the main cause of cervical cell changes leading to cancer

  • Women aged 25–64 in the UK are encouraged to have regular cervical screening

  • Regular screening can save lives, preventing thousands of cervical cancer cases annually in the UK

  • Early detection allows for less invasive treatment and improves outcomes

  • We offer the HPV vaccine Gardasil-9 to adolescents and older to prevent the risk of cervical cancer

Perimenopause

  • The start of your body’s natural transition into menopause, can also signify the end of your reproductive years

  • Hormone level changes can cause a variety of symptoms that can be quite debilitating

  • Perimenopause can last a very varaible length of time but any symptoms can be treated during this phase of life

Menopause

  • This is when your menstrual cycle (periods) stop, and is usually confirmed once you’ve not had a period for at least 12 months in a row

  • A normal part of ageing, and your levels of oestrogen and other hormones naturally fall

  • Most women experience menopause between the ages of 45 and 55

  • Everyone who menstruates will go through menopause, but the symptoms can vary greatly, both physically and emotionally

  • Menopause can be distressing and overwhelming, and our GPs are experienced in caring for and supporting women throughout this time

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

  • HRT, is the most common medical treatment for menopause, prescribed in various forms, such as tablets, skin patches, gels, intrauterine system (coil), implants and creams or pessaries

  • Deciding whether to use HRT is a complex decision with its pros and cons, and our doctors are experienced in initiating, continuing and managing HRT medications
